A Reasonable Accommodation is a change, exception, or adjustment to a rule, policy, practice or service that may be necessary for a person with disabilities to have equal opportunity to use and enjoy a dwelling including, public and common use spaces, or fulfill their program obligations. Applicants or residents may make Reasonable Accommodation requests at any time. They can be made verbally or written and if the disability is obvious, documentation is not needed. It is necessary for both parties to be clear on the request and it should correspond with the disability. Unreasonable requests don’t correspond with the disability or can impact the operating expenses of the community. Let’s explore what is reasonable and a clear defining procedure to approval.
