10 steps of goal setting and achievement 

The difference between those who achieve goals and those who don’t often lies in the approach. Here are 10 steps to guide you in setting effective goals and achieving them consistently:

  1. Define Your Objectives: Before setting goals, you need to know what you want to achieve. Without clear objectives, setting goals becomes challenging. For example, the objective you may be looking at is increasing sales numbers for the next month.

  2. Do Not Merge Two Objectives: At times, we may have multiple objectives that appear similar, especially when we don’t examine them closely. However, treating them as the same objective in goal setting and achieving it is a mistake. Instead, break down the different objectives and set distinct goals to achieve them. For example, increasing customer engagement with the brand and boosting sales might seem similar, but they are two separate objectives, so it’s better to treat them as such.

  3. Conduct a SWOT Analysis: Before setting your goals, conduct a thorough SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) analysis of your business or project. This analysis helps you identify internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats. By understanding these factors, you can set goals that leverage your strengths, address your weaknesses, capitalize on opportunities, and mitigate potential threats.

  4. Put the SMART element in Goals: Once you know what you want to achieve then the next step is to set a smart goal to achieve such an objective. From SMART we mean goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. When our goals are not SMART then we take the first step in the right direction. For example, instead of thinking about promotion as a goal, you should set a SMART goal, which is to be a manager of a sales team in the coming year.

  5. Set SMART flexible goals: Establish SMART goals that permit adjustments in case circumstances change and hinder the achievement of a particular goal. If you set goals that can’t be changed later, it will affect your ability to reach the main goal, as each small goal is important in achieving the main goal.

    Let’s consider a marketing campaign as an example. The main objective of the campaign might be to increase sales by 20% within a quarter. However, if circumstances change, such as a shift in consumer behavior or unexpected market trends, the specific strategies and tactics outlined in the campaign may need to be adjusted.

    For instance, if the initial plan involved heavy reliance on social media advertising but new data shows that email marketing is more effective, the campaign can be adapted to allocate resources towards email marketing instead. By setting flexible goals, the marketing team can pivot their approach as needed to ensure they still achieve the overarching objective of increasing sales.

  6. Break Down Your Goal into Multiple Goals: Achieving something is a journey; it is not a case of standing still and suddenly reaching the final destination one day. This is why you should divide your larger goals into smaller, more manageable tasks or milestones. This makes them less daunting and allows for incremental progress. When you achieve small goals that are part of the main goal, you feel motivated to accomplish other tasks, ultimately reaching your final goals.

  7. Define Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Once you’ve established your goals, identify specific Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure progress and success. KPIs are quantifiable metrics that track performance against objectives. They provide valuable insights into whether your efforts are moving you closer to your goals or if adjustments are needed. Set Deadlines: You have to set a deadline for each individual goal that you want to achieve because in its absence you will wander around and not feel any pressure to do things to achieve goals. So, Establish deadlines for each task or milestone to keep yourself accountable and ensure progress is made in a timely manner.

Surround yourself with a supportive network that provides guidance and encouragement throughout your journey. And when you’ve successfully achieved your goals, take a moment to revel in your accomplishments.
