What Is Form 940?

Form 940 is an annual government form that lists your business’s annual unemployment tax liability. While the form lists the amount of federal taxes you owe, it is not actually the amount of money the government expects you to pay for unemployment taxes. Form 940 is used to report your annual Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA) tax. A Form 940 or Form 941 is an annual federal tax form. Form 940 helps employers and employees collect and pay unemployment insurance (UI) taxes. Form 940EZ is the short-form version of Form 940.

Form 940 is the annual federal unemployment tax report that shows how much money you owe throughout the year. If you are already receiving unemployment benefits, it’s the form that determines how much you receive. The IRS Form 940 has two sections: Form 940 (Schedule A) and Form 940 (Schedule D).

Form 940 reports the employer’s unemployment tax liability and is filed by employers with a business in the U.S. The form is due on the 15th day of the 4th month of the calendar year, which is when you begin paying unemployment taxes. The unemployment tax liability is calculated by looking at the gross wages paid to employees, the number of wages paid to employees, and the total wages paid to employees.

Who Uses Form 940?

Organizations need to file Form 940 if you paid wages of $1,500 or more to employees in a calendar quarter of the year as of 2020. This form will tell you how much you owe in federal income tax and how much tax you can deduct from your wages.

Form 940 requires information such as legal name, address, and employer identification number (EIN), as well as Social Security Number (SSN), and Form W-2 wages, as well as Schedule H (Form 940) wage and tax information for each employee.

Where to Get Form 940?
